You're getting married! Congratulations! And maybe you've found yourself here because ultimately, group photos are not what you're most excited about. You've envisioned a relaxed, joyful, stress-free day and standing in a line smiling for the camera is not what you have in mind. So here I am to tell you that group photos can not only be a part of that dream, but actually they can be a fun part too.
As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen countless couples tie the knot, and over the years I've grown to love this part of the day. These shots are not just about posing; they’re about celebrating love and connection with your family and friends. So, let’s dive into some tips that will help you nail those group shots, make your wedding album shine and help you enjoy the process!
1.The shot list
Before the big day arrives, sit down with your partner and brainstorm the group shots you want. This isn't just about listing names; it’s about considering the dynamics and relationships that matter most to you. Here’s how to create a comprehensive list:
Immediate family first: Start with parents, siblings, and grandparents. They’re the VIPs of your day! Think about whether you’d like separate family shots or getting everyone together in one.
Wedding crew: Your best friends have stood by your side, so don’t forget to capture them! Think about a few fun variations—like just the bridesmaids or just the groomsmen.
You two!: Don’t forget to allow time for some photos of you, the newlyweds. Even if photos aren’t your thing - I promise you won’t regret it.
Once you have your list, share it with your photographer ahead of time. This helps us understand your vision and ensures no one gets left out. Try to keep your list concise, so it doesn’t take too long to get through the photos while still allowing for some spontaneity. No matter how little the list, having it to hand makes sure the process is as seamless and stress-free as possible.
2. Your MC for the day
Let’s face it: weddings can be a bit hectic sometimes. Having an MC or a designated “people wrangler” can make all the difference. This person is usually a part of your wedding crew, who knows everyone and has a knack for organising people! An MC helps rally the troops; rounding up family members and friends when it’s time for photos, making the process smoother and quicker. They can also keep an eye on timings and keep things on track so you have one less thing to worry about.
3. Give yourself time
Time is essential for capturing beautiful group photos. The last thing you want is to feel rushed, so plan in advance. Work with your photographer to schedule group photos into your timeline. Ideally, allow at least 25 to 45 minutes, depending on the number of group shots.
When you give us the gift of time, it allows for creativity and spontaneity. Plus, it sets the tone for a laid-back atmosphere, leading to beautiful, authentic moments.
4. Lean into it!
Group photos don’t have to be stiff or overly formal. In fact, the best shots often happen when everyone is just having fun. So come ready with some awful jokes or funny memories to share and then just chat with those special people around you. Enjoy these precious moments of being together celebrating such a special day. If something (or someone!) doesn’t qute go to plan, roll with it! Some of the most memorable photos come from unplanned moments, so embrace the unexpected and have fun.
The more relaxed and joyful you are, the more your group will follow suit, resulting in images that truly capture the spirit of your wedding day.
5. Make it work, come rain or shine
Ah, the great outdoors. While many couples dream of sunny skies, Mother Nature sometimes has other plans. Instead of letting unpredictable weather dampen your spirits, embrace it. Here’s how to prepare:
Weather-proof your gear: If you’re planning to take group photos outside, consider bringing umbrellas (white or clear are best for the light) or ponchos. These can even become fun elements in your photos.
Plan for alternatives: If rain is in the forecast, scout out indoor locations in advance, or have a backup plan in mind. Your photographer will be ready to help suggest creative spots, but having an idea of the space available is always handy.
Dress accordingly: Make sure everyone in the group knows what to expect weather-wise. If it’s chilly, encourage everyone to bring wraps or jackets that complement the wedding colours if the scheme is important to you.
Most importantly, keep a positive attitude. Rain can create some stunningly romantic photos—think umbrellas, reflections, and moody skies. Whether it’s a sunny day or a surprise shower, your wedding day is about love, laughter, and connection. Embracing the elements will only enhance your story.
With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to capturing memorable group photos that reflect the joy of your celebration. By creating a concise shot list, appointing an MC, allowing enough time, keeping the mood light, and being prepared for any weather, you can enjoy the process and create beautiful memories. I look forward to capturing those unforgettable moments on your special day. Happy planning, and here’s to a fantastic celebration ahead!
